What does it consist of?

Silica fume mainly consists of non-crystalline (amorphous) silicon dioxide, the chemical notation for which is Sio2. A singular silicon particle is very small, about 1/100th of the average cement particle. It is a highly reactive pozzolan due to its extremely fine particles, huge surface area and high concentration of silicon dioxide. Therefore, silica fume for concrete is desirable.

One can use silica fume in concrete in both wet or dry forms, as both are available. The fume is added to the concrete during production at a concrete plant. It is successfully produced in both central-mix and dry-batch plants. Assistance is always nearby when handling silica fume in concrete. It is used to produce high-quality and consistent concrete.

It was only a few years ago that 6,000 PSI concrete was stopped from being considered high strength. Thanks to the addition of silica fume in concrete, today it is possible to produce concrete with compressive strength of more than 15,000 PSI.
